“The Walls” has been awarded a 2014 Social Impact Media Award in the EDU Impact Innovation category!

A duo of videographers from Spain recently partnered with WWCC’s Loretta Taylor, Director of Corrections Education at Coyote Ridge, to create a documentary entitled “The Walls.” The documentary chronicles a project that pairs Walla Walla Community College inmate students with Washington State University undergraduate criminal justice students to prepare and hold a debate.

The 14 minute long film is well worth taking the time to view it, and it can be found online by CLICKING HERE.  Loretta said, “The prison debate project has been the most rewarding project I've been involved with in my 21 years in working in Corrections. Our prison Associate in Arts degree graduates are able to find their voice and self-confidence through this project, while Washington State University Criminal Justice undergraduates get to work closely with prisoners and dispel stereotypes and misconceptions they had about inmates.”

Loretta shared statements from the WWCC inmate students involved as well.  One student said, “Open dialogue with free people made me think beyond the blindfold of prison. I think it got us thinking about how to communicate with people outside our comfort zone.” Another indicated “the WWCC people and WSU people were equals in the educational process. It seemed like the divisions melted away and the education took on another dimension.” With hope of future educational opportunities, one man said the debate project “made me realize that we are not that different, or inferior. There is another world of learning out there…one which is not out of reach.”
